Our Story
Our journey began in February 2014 with the arrival of our very first Border Collie, Ace. Through his breeder, we were introduced into the world of dog sports. The following 3 years we trialed in conformation, agility, obedience and rally-obedience. I came to love how training enriched a dog's life and strengthened our connection. Conformation and Junior handling became a huge part of my life. Studying pedigrees and dog training became my favorite past time. I studied genetics/genomics, later applying my classes to health issues and mendelian traits within the breed. My background helped me hypothesize patterns of inheritance in polygenic traits and carefully select the next puppy to join Skyward...Phoenix, our German import, became the foundation of all the Skyward border collies you see today. She paved the way for versatility within our program. To this day she shows me new sports we can excel in.
Sometimes, the Border Collie life is a little fast-paced. When we branched out to a new breed, we chose a slower and much shorter one, Skye Terriers. We got our start in Skyes in 2018 when we imported two lovely puppies from Finland, Dreamer and Grace. Dreamer became my sole junior's dog, taking huge class placements at Palm Springs, Woofstock, and the Fresno Junior Challenge. Since aging out, we have focused on breed preservation. Skye terriers are an endangered breed, with only 3-4000 individuals world wide. This means that every breeding requires a higher level of research, global cooperation, and planning. While our litters are fewer, we are honored to be a part of this breed's preservation.
Our puppies have found some amazing, active, loving homes across the United States. From Alaska to Florida, our pups excel in various dog sport venues, including Conformation, Agility, Herding, Disc, Flyball, Dock Diving, Obedience, Rally, and Canicross. While some of puppies shine in the spotlight of sporting arenas, they are also beloved family members who are enthusiastic participants in hiking, camping and various outdoor adventures, bringing joy and companionship wherever they go. Some have even have touched the lives of their others as cherished Therapy Dogs providing comfort, support and assistance when it is needed most.
